Abstract
The puppet regime Manchukuo was a
Japanese colony in the first half of 20th century. This article aims
to examine literature under the colonial structure, and analyze different
ethnic literary works in their own language, which includes Chinese, Japanese,
Korean, and Russian. The article tries to inspect the relationship between East
Asian colonialism and literature and illustrate why literature was a part of
anti-colonialism struggles and how. In order to scrutinize East Asian
colonialism and offer a new thought of interpreting East Asian colonial
literature, the article also intends to understand how colonial scars set in
people’s mind, and the psychology of intellectuals in colonial areas, under
which the entanglement of anti-colonialism/collaboration, accepted unwillingly
/approaching voluntarily, and nationalism/colonialism. Besides, this article attempts to discover
another possibility of interpreting colonialism and literature out of current
existing theories of nationalism and post-colonialism, based on the specialty
of Manchukuo literature in East Asia.
